The Graph, a blockchain data indexing and querying protocol, launched a research and development roadmap that will explore new data sources, revolutionize user experience for developers and produce data services that will attract more consumers, the project announced.
The roadmap which The Graph describes as a transformative vision of its future is made up of five core objectives with milestones that will be implemented in phases and will guide the project for years to come. The objectives include data services; developer empowerment; protocol evolution and resiliency; optimized indexer performance; interconnected graph of data.
“Together, these milestones mark a future where The Graph evolves in tandem with users' expectations and needs,” The Graph stated.
In the first objective, which is the world of data services, the project said it would be expanding beyond subgraphs and GraphQL in order to be better positioned to meet increasing demand for data. A subgraph extracts data from a blockchain, processing it and storing it so that it can be easily queried via GraphQL.
Some of the tasks to be implemented in the data service objective are the development of a new query language to allow data scientists and consumers of analytics to query The Graph; queries generated by large language models that indexers can serve and supporting more chains through the chain integration process.
Developers’ user experience will also be refined to boost performance and efficiency for developers who work with subgraphs. As part of the objective to upgrade user experience, The Graph said it would streamline billing and make pricing models clearer as well as support all chains on the network.
In the protocol evolution and resiliency objective, The Graph said it would be committing to decentralisation, permissionless innovation and greater economic efficiency.
Realizing that the effectiveness and reliability of its network is closely knit with the operation efficiency of indexer operations, The Graph said it would be providing indexers with tools and support services to enable them to attain their full potential.
The final objective, which is the ‘interconnected graph of data’ is aimed at helping communities determine which data to trust since it could come from varying sources. “With better representation of knowledge, that is linked together, we can grow our body of shared facts – a foundation for a healthier society. The Graph's vision for an Interconnected Graph of Data is a testament to this, moving from data to information to a human-curated knowledge graph,” The Graph said.
For three years, The Graph has indexed the data on Arweave and 40 other blockchains and made them queryable so that Web3 developers can build applications and protocols with them. The Co-founder of The Graph, Yaniv Tal said that with the new roadmap, Web3 is about to see a massive transformation.
“Since network launch in 2020 Graph Protocol has taken slow deliberate moves.Bigger changes have gone through a lot of analysis and consideration. The new era of The Graph represents an era of change,” Tal wrote.
