A closer look at what's new:
Increased File Upload Limits
The latest version answers the growing demand of users for larger file uploads. After all, we all are getting used to files exceeding a few GigaBytes when our phones can take 4k and 8k videos!
With version 2.22, the upload limits have increased, however, they significantly vary based on the browser you are using, or whether you are using the web app or mobile app. For instance, while using Chrome, Edge, or Brave browsers, users can upload files up to 15 GiB directly to the network.
The major difference on the backend is that now instead of holding the entire upload in the browser's memory, ArDrive has innovated its process by streaming files in smaller bytes, making uploads more efficient. Hence the browser limit discrepancy.
Plus, should you need to stop midway, you now have the flexibility to cancel uploads in progress.
Understanding Upload Limits
You’ll need to pick your platform wisely if you are considering taking advantage of the larger file uploads.
While the web app lets you upload 15 GiB directly to the network, the Turbo version only allows for 2 GiB. And for those curious, though there's no theoretical limit for direct-to-network uploads, ArDrive states it has tested up to 10 GiB files for efficiency.
Moreover, there are also caps on the number of files you can upload via the Web App. Based on recent tests by the ArDrive team, Chrome and Brave browsers can handle up to 1,500 files per upload, while Firefox steps it up with a larger 10,000 files count.
*Direct-to-network uploads have no theoretical limits, however, we have tested files up to 10 GiB.
Enhanced Safety with Cryptographic Checks
Now, before you download any file, ArDrive ensures its authenticity by verifying its cryptographic signature. This is a simple method that is easily implemented due to the use of blockchain tech where verification is straightforward.
The cryptographic check adds a layer of security, ensuring that the files haven't been tampered with, making your downloads safer. If there's a mismatch in the signature, ArDrive stops the download, protecting your data integrity - and devices!
Who needs an antivirus, eh?
