HackerNoon’s Contributors To Get NameSpace’s Decentralised Identifiers
Web3 is booming, and Arweave is becoming a popular infrastructure choice for developers. PermaDAO is a community where everyone can contribute to the Arweave ecosystem. It's a place to propose and tackle tasks related to Arweave, with the support and feedback of the entire community. Join PermaDAO and help shape Web3!

More than 50,000 contributors on Hackernoon will have decentralised identifiers following a partnership with namespace.gg, a chain-agnostic stack built to deploy custom name services for DAOs, protocols and dApps owned by Decent Land Labs.
Decentralised identifiers replace incomprehensible long alphanumeric wallets for contributors to HackerNoon with easy to remember handles.
Alphanumeric wallet addresses present a Web3 user experience problem and for the Founder and CEO of HackerNoon David Smooke, decentralised IDs are a viable solution that the partnership offers. Adopting DIDs is one of the steps Hackernoon is taking towards becoming fully decentralised. Other actions it has taken in the bid to decentralise the platform include wallet login and using Arweave as backup storage for stories.
“By turning unrememberable numerical strings into human-readable words, like dot HackerNoon, we are making web3 addresses more discoverable. All HackerNoon contributors now have the option to claim the DID (decentralized ID) of their existing HackerNoon handle,” he said in press release.
Benjamin Brandall, the co-founder of Decent Land Labs said the project will ensure HackerNoon IDs are permanent and secured on the blockchain and contribute to the decentralisation effort of HackerNoon.
“At namespace.gg, our mission is to simplify access to decentralized identity and make it easy for communities to deploy IDs that play by their own rules,” Brandall said.
In the future, users of HackerNoon can claim decentralised IDs for free. They will also own a decentralised author profile outside the Hackernoon ecosystem with ownership stored on the Arweave blockchain.
NameSpace is built on MEM and everPay, with IDs stored permanently on Arweave with a pay-once-own-forever model. While the subject of traditional identifiers does not really own them as the centralised issuer can withdraw the identifier, the subject of a decentralised identity owns and controls that digital identity.
With DIDS, issues such as data breaches, privacy invasion and single points of failure are addressed, providing a better alternative to centralized identifiers.
