Arweave Ecosystem Weekly Report #90 & #91: The ‘Independence Day’ Edition
This is probably the weirdest weekly report yet: not only is it a double one, but it is released a week later. So, the next week you'll receive one that covers the period between the fourth of July and 14. I know that at this point some of you are like "Whatever, the frequency of the weekly reports has been all over the place since forever".
The gist is that with each passing report, I started to have the feeling that the main group of readers for this thing aren't the current ones. I can bet that our current readers know the news as they happen. Hopefully, at some point, Arweave will take its rightful place, and a lot of new people will try to make sense of what happened on Arweave all this time they were unaware of its existence. So, instead of trying to get it out as quickly as possible, I started to take my time and consolidate it as is made to last.
But enough with the blabber. Let's dive into it.
I. Arweave Network
First - we did it! The network passed 100 Petabytes in size. For reference - the entire data set of the National Archive of Great Britain is about 15 Petabytes, so if they decide to jump on Arweave tomorrow, they would probably have more than five replicas for each file, and the endowment will open to pour more $AR in the pockets of the miners in order to bring more storage to the network, to accommodate 20 replicas/files - the minimum required by Arweave standards for provable resilience of the data set.
I didn't bring those specific National Archives into the discussion just by chance. In the past they actually tried to use public blockchains for securing the provable immutability of their data set - just check it. Let's call it just a heads-up for those that consider daily upload size as THE metric for Arweave. Being consistent will bring Arweave in the face of huge data sets that need its traits, don't despair.
As you can see, the month of June ended with another record for the Network. Over 95 million transactions were recorded on Arweave. To put this into perspective, Bitcoin registered shy of over 93 million transactions in 2022 (yeah, it took Bitcoin a year to reach that number). Some could argue that this is not a fair comparison, we all know that Bitcoin itself won't scale, that is what Lighting Network is for, blah blah blah. I don't have a monthly TX count for the main blockchains at hand but I'm pretty sure that you'll be awed by how well Arweave performs compared to the others.
Still, this is not the point. The real takeaway is that we are taking for granted something that other chains are craving for: true, built-in scalability.
II. Arweave Ecosystem
Your new explorer for decentralised databases
This week your favourite decentralised SQL database, Kwil, launched a brand new Database Explorer! The Database Explorer is a new user interface that provides developers, database administrators, and everyday users the means to easily visualise and interact with their relational data on Kwil.
Before the introduction of the Database Explorer, accessing and managing data on Kwil required the use of the Kwil SDK or their CLI. These tools, while powerful, presented barriers to non-technical users. The Database Explorer addresses this challenge, offering a GUI which provides a more intuitive way for users to manage and interact with their databases on Kwil.
With the help of the Explorer, users now have the ability to search for databases using an Ethereum wallet address or a Kwil database identifier, vastly increasing the ease of finding relevant data set. This, in turn, will allow developers to build upon existing data sets in the public Kwil network and create rich, insightful applications faster. More than a simple data viewer, the Database Explorer also allows users to execute actions, fund accounts, and access other relevant database metadata.
The Explorer represents a major stride towards bringing traditional database management to Web3, showing that decentralised databases can become a resilient storage layer in the Web3 development stack, especially when powered by Arweave.
Besides the launch of their Explorer, Kwil plans to continuously enhance the features of it’s network in the coming months to support developers building on the platform. Testament to that are the two new features that were also shipped last week - Foreign Key Support and Error functions. As per the team, these were frequently requested by developers and will allow to easily link Kwil tables between each other and also build more complex logic within their code with the help of Error functions.

Just when you thought TikTok couldn't get more addictive, along comes PermaTok, a new project that seeks to immortalise your TikTok videos, one silly dance at a time. How does it do that, you ask? By leveraging the power of the permaweb, of course!
PermaTok, developed by Pawan Paudel (or ar://blockchainholic, as he goes on Twitter), allows you to permanently store your favourite TikTok videos on Arweave to make sure you’ll always be able to take that trip down nostalgia lane. Because the project integrates Othent out of the box, using PermaTok is as easy as doing the Renegade dance. Sign in with your Gmail account, paste the TikTok URL, and voila! Your video is uploaded to Arweave to be admired by your future self and potential alien life forms who might stumble upon our intergalactic internet one day.
Remember when you had to make do with your fleeting 15 seconds of fame? With PermaTok, those days are as gone as the bear market (we’re not certain about the bear market, but we sure do hope so…). So put on your best face and get ready to save, search, and enjoy your TikToks for eternity with Permatok!

Thanks to the wonders of AI-powered translations, the once English-only developer resource for building on the Permaweb now caters to Spanish-speaking developers too. Picture this: an English document gets updated and a GitHub action whirs to life, running a script that spawns a Spanish doppelganger. It's kind of like having a bilingual Shakespeare on your side, but minus the ruffled collar and old English verbiage!
Although the AI-translator is pretty darned impressive, it's still just a machine. As such, there might be some areas where it might churn out something that's more abstract than the original documentation. So, the team humbly requests all fluent Spanish speakers to lend a helping hand. Have you met Glome?
Last week we also got to meet Glome, the all new smart contract engine from the clever minds at RareWeave. Now, that might be a bit abstract, so if you don’t know what a smart contract engine is, you can think of Glome as an evolution to the SmartWeave core, enabling the execution of smart contracts on the permaweb.
So why do we need Glome when we already have Smartweave and alternatives like Warp or EXM? Well, it looks like Glome has some standout features which differentiate it from the competition. Let’s dive right in.
First, the team has focused on performance and has taken a slightly different approach than most other alternatives built on Arweave. Most competitors use lazy evaluation which means they need to query the network to get the data needed for the execution of smart contracts and then evaluate it on the user’s machine. With the data stored on Arweave growing larger every day, sometimes querying data through the dedicated GraphQL API can take up to 7 seconds which in our current age might be considered slow. That is why Glome caches the required transactions and execution results, removing the constraints typically associated with reading straight from the chain. This shift in method resonates with a broader philosophy, one inspired by how cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, operate. It allows Glome to have the results of the smart contract execution ready at the user's fingertips, enhancing its efficiency.
Second comes scalability, which becomes a difficult thing when you have millions of contract to track and evaluate. That’s why Glome only tracks and executes the smart contracts that are required. It's as selective as a picky eater at a buffet, but for good reason. This way, Glome will not get bloated and bogged down even when we’ll reach trillions of smart contracts deployed on the permaweb.
Third and most importantly, according to its creators, Glome was built with decentralisation in mind. Anyone can run a Glome node, not just the smart contract dev geeks. Picture every user with their own combo of an Arweave node, a light Bundlr node, and Glome - fully decentralised and permissionless.
Lastly, for those who worry about how their transactions end up on the permaweb, Glome offers flexible solutions. You can easily switch between bundled (powered by Bundlr) or non-bundled transactions at will - it's as accommodating for both those worried about slow 2-minute block times or a high decrease in Nakamoto coeffecient. It's like the Swiss Army knife of smart contract engines, ready to handle whatever you throw at it.

Take full advantage of your Permaswap NFTs
Have you, by any chance, forgotten about your everPay NFT? You shouldn’t have, as just this week, the Permaswap team reminded us that everPay NFTs can be used for mining on their DEX, broadening the scope and utility of your precious art beyond mere digital collectible.
The mining feature revolves around the everPay NFT series, a collaboration between everPay and a diverse group of projects and artists. The series was comprised of twelve separate auctions, each featuring nine unique pieces of art, adding up to a total of 108 individual pieces. These digital artworks encompass a variety of themes, from the quirky Winston Family collection, to the lively Crypto Slang Gang and the enigmatic Old Gods Remastered (created by yours truly).

Permaweb development just got easier!
On the heels of the Arweave Kit launch, the community brought another improvement to permaweb development experience through the launch of the "create-permaweb-app" package! The tool which can be used via npm, enables developers to generate deployable permaweb applications in mere seconds, simplifying the entire development process on Arweave.
The package supports popular JavaScript frameworks such as Svelte, Next.js, and Vite, but also caters to the diverse styling needs of today’s dApps with the option of using plain CSS or frameworks like Tailwind and Chakra UI. The "create-permaweb-app" also takes care of essential Arweave dependencies, including arkb and Bundlr, ensuring that your deployment process on the permaweb will be seamless.
The creator of the package, Pbillingsby, has made the entire project available on Github and assured us that full documentation will be available soon. In the meantime, a word of caution for developers using the tool - keep your wallet keys safe and ensure they are not pushed to GitHub or any public repository throughout the development process.
With the combination of both versatility and simplicity, "create-permaweb-app" is definitely going to enable more development on the permaweb and will help developers create beautiful and responsive web designs for their dApps. Arweave meetups are going global!
We’re glad to see that over the past two weeks, there has been a wave of global community events in the Arweave ecosystem! There's something profoundly satisfying about decentralisation enthusiasts huddled around, churning the discussion mill - all for the love of Arweave. Throw in a dash of presentations by founders from the Arweave ecosystem, and you've got an ideal recipe for a meetup!
First, the community staged an upbeat Arweave meetup in London which owes its success to the diligent efforts of Luke Annison and Gregogun, who brought it to fruition with the help of Arweave Meetup Grants. A hearty shoutout also goes out to Josh Benaron of Bundlr for being the spotlight presenter at the London meetup. Can we just say, there was more talk of bundling than in a Christmas elf workshop?
Meanwhile, Arweave Africa successfully held its first presentation in Uganda, spearheaded by Kim Merdi. The event garnered large interest and has set the stage for further exploration into Arweave's potential within the African continent.
And to kick off that exploration, the team at Arweave Africa also held their first developer workshop where some early Arweave pioneers got their first taste of coding for the decentralised internet of the future!
The gatherings were not just about networking and tech talks, but also about offering opportunities to newcomers and demonstrating the welcoming and educational spirit of the Arweave community. This achievement was backed by a collection of investors, including Arweave SCP Ventures, Binance Labs, Comma3 Ventures, SevenX Ventures, HashKey Capital and others.
The seed round is a testament to investor confidence in Mind Network’s product, the Web3 Zero Trust Data Lake. Their solution aims to provide end-to-end encryption for user data and advanced access control, so that dApps only access the data you want them to see. This will grant you complete control over your personal data, financial transactions, and user interactions. Your Log Store Network is ready for service
Streamr Network, one of the pioneers of real-time data in Web3, has been cooking something exciting with Usher Labs! Following the community's positive vote in the SIP-13 governance proposal which approved the initiative, the much-awaited Log Store Network AlphaNet is ready to step into the spotlight - offering persistent decentralised storage for data transmitted over Streamr.
The Log Store’s first iteration enables developers to store and query Streamr data with an authenticity seal, which essentially means you won't be dealing with any fraudulent data. And to make sure your data doesn't take an unsolicited trip down the Silk Road, it's validated by the KYVE Network and stored permanently on Arweave.
In terms of underlying code, the network nodes and client packages have been developed in Typescript, and the Smart Contracts written in Solidity. This ensures a smooth handshake between Streamr and the KYVE Network's frameworks, with the underlying smart contract deployed on Polygon. The AlphaNet has launched with a custom ERC20 Token, in case you thought you didn’t have enough tokens to keep track of. Not to worry though, with the network being in Alpha, there’s a handy faucet available for interested users.
Peeling back another layer, the AlphaNet operates on a two-tier network. The Broker Network takes care of events and storage, while the Validator layer is the annoying older sibling ensuring everything's in order (with the help of KYVE), managing rewards and penalties, and overseeing decentralised uploads to Arweave. If you're an absolute nerd about data authenticity, the Log Store network will be right up your alley. It does all the heavy lifting of bundling, validating, and storing your data securely on Arweave. Plus, you can stake tokens, use the API to fetch data within specified timestamps, and even choose to verify your response.
P.S. Fair warning from the team - as the name mentions, this is an Alpha release, so some bugs are to be expected. Nevertheless, the team is committed to squashing them all, so if you see any just raise the alarm! Or submit a Github issue if you don’t like loud noises…
Welcome to the new internet
In what could very well be an era-making move, Forward Research unveiled the beta version of their Universal Data License (UDL). The framework aims to revamp content monetisation and remixing on the permaweb, effectively democratising the online space by giving creators the reins of power.
UDL permits creators to dictate their own terms and conditions for their creative products and, in turn giving developers access to a colossal open data library. The license eliminates the confines of current content monetisation systems, paving the way for expansive internet economies that don't play favourites - unless you're a creator, consumer, or developer. Sorry, big corporations, your reign seems to be on shaky ground.
With UDL, creators aren’t forced to accept the platform-given terms anymore, but instead, they are the ones that set their own terms, and platforms must adhere to these. For Web2 platforms, this is kryptonite; on the other hand...there’s a good part for dApps - you can now kickstart your journey without the crippling 'cold start' problem by using Permaweb content under the license provisions set by the creator.
The UDL doesn't just stop there. It enables content creators to set programmable parameters for various aspects of monetisation, like the license term, payment currency, and licensing fee. It's like a buffet of monetisation options and you're invited to take your pick.
Bear in mind this is just the initial beta release of the Universal Data License, and Forward Research is all ears for feedback and comments from the community. So, dear internet denizens, it's time to grab a magnifying glass and pore over the UDL text here. III. Casual talks about blockchain and Arweave
Immediately after we renamed this section and shifted its purpose from hunting Web2 "bloopers", Elon Musk made one of his most "controversial" moves yet: he rationed the number of tweets "served" daily to users. The official reason for the decision is apparently related to the proliferation of data-scrapping tools that fuel AI training.
Of course this stirred a lot of reactions. Some (well, most of them) just showing discontent, and some trying to come up with solutions.
As a response to the responses, Sam presented our alternative:
As you already saw, Universal Data License - UDL was launched, and it really is a big deal. The question is - is Web2 ready for this kind of commitment? But what about Web3?
Let's take them step by step and first consider this particular case. I am inclined to say that no, Elon Musk will never consider this sort of solution. All his actions until this point converge to conclude that he considers Twitter's data set as his own personal property. He's actively trying to fence it and the particle "open data" is probably as attractive to him as the combination of white socks and sandals. Actually, it doesn't matter if the owner is called Musk or Zuck, or whoever. The reality is that these guys won't willingly let away the current model based on APIs because it is lucrative for them.
Again, what about Web3? In any iteration that's a bit higher than Web 2.0, UDL makes a lot of sense. Web 3, Web 2.5, even Web 2.1 (it can be a thing, I suppose; believe it or not, that 0.1 can go a long way), is by design more modular and is willing to scrap some economies of scale for stuff that it doesn't make any sense for traditional platform owners, like for example writing a legally binding contract for each puny piece of data, which - blasphemy - favours the little guy who actually created that data.
However, realistically speaking, we won't see anything that comes close to Web 2 numbers in terms of adoption in the next few years. For reference, Meta's competitor to Twitter - Threads, accrued its first million users in less than an hour since its inception. We need help and we'll probably get it from the most unexpected place: the boring bureaucracy in Brussels. Sinnce 2019 they are drafting a piece of regulation called "EU Data Act" (don't dare to mistake it for the Data Governance Act). This thingie calls for "portability, access, re-use and interoperability" within the digital data realm. Theoretically, it should allow the creation of a totally new framework that will have at its foundation a portable digital account for each user. A big data dump for each individual into which any web platform can tap into, but not "own it".
Ofc, the devil is in the details. Huge interests are manifesting through lobby and are continuously trying to shape the final format of the regulation. Will it end up being an abstract layer with a convoluted design that will be buried somewhere in the settings of each app? Will it be an actual lever that will press the big Web2 tech into adopting a more modular and interoperable stack? We don't know, but what is certain is that instead of just pondering on the potential outcomes, actively engaging in public consultations will be a more fruitful approach.

I believe that you are usually skipping this section. This time don't.
When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the bands which have tied them to centralised databases and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
