Arweave Ecosystem Weekly Report #51: The ‘Out of Scale’ Edition

The beauty of a truly decentralised community is that even if one member of the community gets tired, every time there will be another two, three, or four people who will push forward with fresh forces. In the last week, this feeling was more present than ever, at least for me. And guess what, when you see a lot of cool projects being relentless, it gives exactly the boost you need to continue. So yeah, when ArConnect becomes ten times faster, when Kyve launches a use cases handbook for developers, and when new initiatives, like PermaDAO, with the sole mission to promote the Permaweb, are becoming present – how on earth could one still be tired?

I. Arweave Network

Probably everybody knows how the EVM chains work when it comes to the transaction numbers and their implications on the price/transaction. They all can execute only a certain number of transactions in each block and when the network becomes congested the actual access to writing something new on the blockchain is prohibitive. A simple swap between two tokens becoming as expensive as a fancy dinner. Of course, there is the promise of different layer two solutions that will take the burden from the mainnet.

Arweave, from this point of view, is far away from a mere promise.  For more than a year, bundled transactions transformed Arweave into a truly scalable solution that’s no more constrained by the normal laws of the blockchain, as Sam Williams, the founder of Arweave, observed.

II. Arweave Ecosystem

Browsing for some digital art?

Permaswap.network has just released a new update and now supports Arweave Atomic NFTs to be auctioned and acquired directly on their platform. You might have heard stories of people buying NFTs and being greeted by a beautiful 404 error page down the road -this happens because the art is stored on a centralised Web2 platform that removed their NFT or even ceased to exist in the meantime. This is why the Arweave Atomic NFT protocol is the best alternative for NFTs today as it allows all details, including the art, to be stored on the permaweb in a fully secured and decentralised manner. Head on over to Permaswap.network to check out the first featured collection created by the Akord team.

Your favourite wallet just got faster

As we are already accustomed, the Verto team has another treat for us this week in the form of an upgrade to the ArConnect wallet. The new update focuses on improving the user experience and speed of ArConnect for both new and existing users. Users creating new wallets will experience a faster process as the duration for generating wallets has been shortened by 3 times. At the same time the time it takes to send and process a transaction has been reduced by more than 10 times. Want to experience the new blazing speeds? Head on over to ArConnect and start interacting with the Permaweb.

Dip your toes in a data lake this summer season

KYVE Network is an exciting project that is building the data infrastructure of Web3 on the Arweave blockchain. Their technology is used to build Web3 data lakes that can be used to store financial data, network transactions data, block data and even more. This, in turn, allows projects to have better access to the relevant data and increase transparency around on-chain activity. Right now they are looking to crowd-source use-cases for their data lakes that will eventually be built together with the community, so head on over to their Twitter account and take part in building the data highway of Web3.

Arweave will be present at ETHWarsaw

Who said that blockchain is plagued only by toxic rivalries between protocols? Well, almost nobody, besides some maximalists. ETHWarsaw is the best example of how two different networks can interact and exchange their experience. Warp Contracts, RedStone, and Arweave core team will be presenting in Ethereum’s stronghold, explaining how we are doing stuff in the permanent way. Make sure that you don’t miss this event in September.

PermaDAO revealed itself

For almost a month a new project that has the particle “Perma” appeared on Twitter. Who are they and what’s their mission? Well, some questions are still to be answered but one thing is certain: they are aiming to grow the Permaweb by attracting new builders. At least this is the statement of their first disclosed partners, MoleDAO. Given the fact that MoleDAO is a community that aims to connect blockchain talents, with a follower count of over 13k, we recommend taking a look at the future endeavours of PermaDAO – they are definitely on to something.

III. Things you won’t encounter on Arweave

It doesn’t matter who you are, you can be a simple citizen or the Department of Homeland Security, it is only a matter of when you will lose some critical data, not if. Usually, force institutions, like the one in question, will state that their data is sensitive and therefore you can not ask them to upload it on a distributed storage system like Arweave. We could argue countless hours about the degree of privacy Arweave can deliver, nevertheless, a fact is certain: this loss of data would have never happened on Arweave. We already wrote, besides others, about the case of British National Archives, an institution that felt it was necessary at a certain point to enter willingly into a distributed storage system.

Surprisingly, they tried blockchain at some point. Even though that particular project – Archangel, a joint venture with the University of Surrey and the Open Data Institute – looks abandoned, its philosophical roots are unquestionably correct. Archangel tried to store document metadata and “fingerprints” on the Ethereum mainnet in order to assure the public that its data would never be tampered with.

If one wants to study the desired outputs and the technical aspects of this project, it will become obvious that the tech needed for this to succeed was not available at that particular moment. They were forced to reinvent the wheel and create some sort of hash with the use of AI which had to be independent of future file format changes. What?! Why don’t you store the file in its original format on the blockchain and create a permanent interface with the needed decoder to retrieve the file on every browser?

Well, because it’s not economically viable to store big chunks of data on Ethereum…and that brings us inevitably to Arweave.

This only makes us wonder when other institutions will start to implement Arweave as a permanent, immutable storage solution.
